Handmaid's Tale's tense season 5 trailer lands online - Digital Spy

The Handmaid's Tale season 5 has its first teaser trailer, and Commander Fred Waterford's death will have consequences.

Fans of the dystopian thriller – adapted from Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel – will recall season 4's brutal climax, where June (played by Elisabeth Moss) hunted down Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) before putting him to the sword, so to speak.

Judging by the new footage, Gilead's rulers are out for revenge.

We catch up with the escaped handmaid in Canada with her husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle), yet she's clearly feeling the weight of her actions, and their unfinished nature.

"I want her to know that it was me, the grieving wife. She knows the world is watching..." narrates June, alluding to Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), who we see out to turn the tables and smoke out her husband's murderer.

The showdown is on.

Back in April, Moss herself teased how season 5 stands apart from what's come before.

"I will say that the season itself is possibly one of the wilder rides that we've had. Some seasons a lot happens, some seasons not as much happens," she said.

"This season, I almost can't keep up. And it's not lip service. I truly mean I almost can't keep up with the amount of activity that's happening.

"So that's been exciting, and it's been challenging of course, because it means we're working really hard, and we're on location a lot. But never a dull moment is the way I would say it."

The Handmaid's Tale returns for season 5 on September 14, streaming on Hulu in the US. The show airs on Channel 4 in the UK.
