Godzilla vs Kong Writer Discusses the Possibility of Sequels & Spinoffs - Screen Rant

The screenwriter of Godzilla vs. Kong has shared details on if there are plans for a sequel or spin-off films for the MonsterVerse. Max Borenstein has been one of the key architects to Legendary Pictures MonsterVerse franchise having written the screenplays for Godzilla and was one of the co-writers on Kong: Skull Island, as well as contributing to the story of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He is a co-writer on the recently release Godzilla vs. Kong alongside Eric Pearson.

Godzilla vs. Kong is the film fans have been waiting for since the project was announced in 2015, shortly after the release of Godzilla. Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters began laying the groundwork for the big title fight between the two titans, using the post-credit scenes to connect the two franchises together. Now Godzilla vs. Kong has come out and is performing very well at the box-office both internationally and domestically for a pandemic release, questions now turn to where the MonsterVerse will go.

In a recent interview with Max Borenstein with Collider, reporter Steven Weintraub asked Borenstein if there were ever any plans after Godzilla vs. Kong in the development stage or if this was the peak of the franchise. Borenstein says that the main goal of getting Godzilla and Kong together on a film was the focus but doesn't rule out the possibility of more films in the franchise. He doesn't indicate if he is attached to any other projects within the universe but is excited at where it could go. Borenstein said:

"Hopefully there will be I have no idea. If not the peak then the plateau that everyone has been aiming for. This is a point that has been a part of the ambition since the beginning so I look forward to whatever the next iteration of this franchise is. This has certainly been getting these two characters, like The Avengers, you build to that place. That's not to say there aren't future movies that bring everyone together."

Godzilla vs Kong Kong on building

Director Adam Wingard recently confirmed they cut a post-credit scene from Godzilla vs. Kong that would have set up the next MonsterVerse film. Part of this could be due to the MonsterVerse franchise's uncertainty given the poor box-office results from Godzilla: King of the Monsters back in 2019. That film was the lowest-grossing film in the franchise, and given that Legendary and Toho's deal was set to expire in 2020 it could be that the studio at the time decided that Godzilla vs. Kong, the film they had been building to, could serve as a possible endpoint for the franchise.

Godzilla vs. Kong seems to have breathed new life into the franchise. It has done well in theaters and has earned the best review score on RottenTomatoes of any film in the franchise. It is still possible for Legendary Pictures to continue the MonsterVerse with Kong, Godzilla, or another Titan, be it a fan favorite or an entirely new one. Legendary Pictures is also the studio behind the Pacific Rim franchise. Guillermo del Toro and Steven S. DeKnight have expressed interest in having the MonsterVerse and Pacific Rim franchises crossover with each other, so there is still plenty of monster stories to tell.
