Ashton Kutcher has resigned from his anti-child sex abuse charity following outrage over a letter of support to a judge after Danny Masterson's rape conviction.
In his resignation to the charity, Thorn, Kutcher said his support letter was an "error in judgement".
Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for the rapes of two women.
A similar letter was sent by Kutcher's wife, actress Mila Kunis.
The letters and subsequent apology from Kutcher and Kunis - both of whom starred in That 70s Show alongside Masterson - were widely criticised by victims and advocacy groups.
In a resignation letter directed to the board of Thorn and posted online, Kutcher said his decision to step down from the board is "rooted in the recognition of recent events".
"After my wife and I spent several days of listening, personal reflection, learning and conversations with survivors and the employees and leadership at Thorn, I have determined the responsible thing for me to do is resign as chairman of the board, effective immediately," Kutcher said in the resignation letter.
"I cannot allow my error in judgment to distract from our efforts and the children we serve," he added.
Established by Kutcher and ex-wife Demi Moore in 2012, Thorn focuses on combatting sexual exploitation of children.
Much of the group's focus is on the Internet and the role it plays in the spread of child sexual abuse material and sexual slavery. To date, the group claims to have identified 27,000 child victims and removed more than two million potentially sexual abuse files from the internet.
In his resignation message, Kutcher said his letter of support for Masterson - in which he described him as someone who treated people with "decency" and "generosity" - was "yet another painful instance of questioning victims who are brave enough to share their experiences".
"This is precisely what we have all worked to reverse over the last decade," he added.

The top prize has become one of the most vital predictors of awards season success. In past years, best picture winners such as Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” (2018) and Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” (2020) made a winning stop at TIFF before getting Oscar glory. Other TIFF Audience Award recipients such as “The Fabelmans” (2022), “Belfast” (2021), “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “La La Land” (2016) are among the movies that went on to receive noms.
So, which movies are buzzing with support? The movie that wins at TIFF is often tied to two critical factors — the number of attendees and the timing of its first screening.
After the first weekend, when most of the World Premieres occur, many attendees and journalists head home, leaving acquisition titles and films that bowed at other fests to fight it out for those still around.
George C. Wolfe’s historical biopic “Rustin” is a crowd-pleaser and is said to have played to rapturous applause on Tuesday. However, its star Colman Domingo, who received one of the TIFF Tribute Awards, had another hit at the fest, the independent “Sing Sing,” which tells the story of a theater group made up of formerly incarcerated actors. Domingo was allowed to promote due to receiving a SAG interim agreement, and his presence helped the movie garner a four-minute standing ovation. That could give the movie an edge over his civil rights movie from Netflix, or worse yet, create a vote split. Nonetheless, he remains one of the leading contenders in the best actor race.
With that said, I suspect Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” with Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, will be the one to be named the people’s choice. The Focus Features movie was popular based on social media reactions and in-person conversations with some festival-goers. It’s the type of dramedy that mass audiences respond to, which helped TIFF runner-up flicks like “St. Vincent” (2014) and “Philomena” (2013). This could get over the finish line.
We’re watching out for the two surprise hits out of TIFF — Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” and Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” — that each brought down the house at their initial screenings. Even though they explore varying subject matter within separate genres, the brilliant writing may create divides among general consumers. But movies labeled “difficult to watch” like “Roma” (2018) managed to at least get in the top three before receiving 10 Oscar noms. Even the slave epic “12 Years a Slave” (2013) managed to win the Toronto People’s Choice for Steve McQueen before winning best picture. In the style of an Alexander Payne movie like “Sideways” (2004), Jefferson’s comedy about Black exploitation could be in the running with its sharp satire and fantastic performances.
There’s always room for surprises. No one expected Nadine Labaki’s “Where Do We Go Now?” (2011) to take the award over the eventual international feature winner “A Separation” during that year, while David Cronenberg’s “Eastern Promises” (2007) dropped a few jaws went it won over the future original screenplay winner “Juno.”
Potential shockers could be GameStop stock drama “Dumb Money,” the prize, especially since its director Craig Gillespie nearly won the TIFF award for “I, Tonya” (2017). With a large ensemble and a timely story, the Sony film could accelerate its chances in adapted screenplay (and maybe more).
The Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones legal dramedy “The Burial” from Maggie Betts was also gobbled up at its Monday evening premiere. A quintessential crowdpleaser, it could make pundits believe in the Amazon MGM title.

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda says even more episodes of Netflix’s live-action adaptation are on the way.
ByCharles Pulliam-Moore, a reporter focusing on film, TV, and pop culture. Before The Verge, he wrote about comic books, labor, race, and more at io9 and Gizmodo for almost five years.
Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation is better than it has any business being, and the streamer intends to keep all of the first season’s good momentum going with even more episodes, according to Eiichiro Oda.
In a move that only comes as (a bit of) a surprise given how opaque Netflix likes to be about the logic behind its choice to cancel some shows just as they’re really taking off, Oda announced today that the live-action One Piece has been renewed for an unannounced number of new episodes / seasons. In an announcement video featuring one of One Piece’s transponder snails, Oda thanked fans, new and old, for supporting his work and said that “it’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient.”
“It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it,” Oda said. “To everyone who’s been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, thank you so much.”
Between Hollywood’s ongoing double labor strike and the lack of a production timeline, it’s not clear when in the future viewers might see Luffy and his crew next. But given how the show’s first season really only scratched the source material’s surface, there’ll be no shortage of inspiration for One Piece’s creative team to tap into when they begin production on what’s in the pipeline.
The “Calm Down” singer attended the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night and later made the rounds on social media for making a sour face as the nominees for best R&B were announced.
In the category, Chloe Bailey and Brown’s “How Does It Feel” — from the Chloe x Halle singer’s debut solo album In Pieces — made the cut, and as a clip of the duo’s video rolled and Brown’s name was called, Gomez was spotted scrunching up her face at his name and then smiling and clapping for the other artists in the category.
iHeartRadio Australia grabbed video of the moment and shared it on Instagram with the caption: “@selenagomez reacts to @chrisbrownofficial being nominated.”
The Rare Beauty founder flippantly responded in the comments, “Who cares lol.”
Gomez also seemingly addressed the moment going viral via her Instagram Story, writing in simple text, “I will never be a meme again. I’d rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love.”
Gomez’s on-camera reaction to Brown’s name likely stems from the R&B singer’s 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna ahead of that year’s Grammy Awards. Brown pleaded guilty to a felony and was sentenced to five years’ probation and domestic violence counseling.
For his part, not long after the show aired, Brown wrote on his Instagram Story: “Let me mind my business.”
In addition to reuniting with her bestie Taylor Swift at Tuesday’s show, Gomez also took home best Afrobeats for her featured spot on Rema’s “Calm Down,” which recently hit 1 billion streams on Spotify.

In a crowded area backstage, Megan is seen getting glam while the members of NSYNC pass. Timberlake, smiling, leans in to say something to her. Megan responds, pointing her finger emphatically and then turns away, looking angry.
The group’s Joey Fatone then says something as well.
It looks like it could be an argument, but a backstage source who witnessed the exchange tells Variety there was “zero fight.”
“He said, ‘It’s so nice to meet you,’ and she said ‘No, no this don’t count, this don’t count. We gotta meet proper.’
“It was very cute,” the source says. Variety will have more on the situation as it develops.
While no official comment has yet been made, NSYNC have been broadly hinting at a reunion of sorts for weeks — one that Taylor Swift, the VMAs’ big winner so far, continued when she accepted the evening’s first award from the group, for best pop video.
While the group did not respond, she gushed, “Are you guys gonna do something? I need to know what it is!”
What might they be doing next? The hints couldn’t be much less subtle: For weeks the internet has been alight with reports that the group has recorded a new song, written by Timberlake, for “Trolls Band Together,” the upcoming third installment in DreamWorks’ animated franchise, which, judging by the trailers, has a boy band reunion storyline for Justin Timberlake’s character, Branch. The group’s other four members — JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick — and also expected to join Timberlake in the film.

Why, yes, Kris Jenner and longtime love Corey Gamble are still doing amazing, sweetie. Nearly nine years ago, the music industry insider approached the world's most famous momager at fashion designer Riccardo Tisci's 40th birthday bash in Ibiza and "I just tried saying, 'You're beautiful. I'd love to get to know you,'" he shared on the family's OG series, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, "and it went from there."
A decade on, Kris is still loving life with her "walking, talking Luther Vandross song." Marking his 42nd birthday last November, the 67-year-old thanked him "for bringing so much love and light into my life. You are so smart, kind, generous, funny, protective, and creative. You remind me every day how blessed and lucky we are."
The work, by the Ukrainian composer Maxim Kolomiiets and the American playwright George Brant, is inspired by the accounts of mothers whose children were taken during the war.
The Metropolitan Opera announced Monday that it had commissioned a new opera about Russia’s abduction and deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children, the latest action by the company to show support for war-torn Ukraine.
The work, which will be written by the Ukrainian composer Maxim Kolomiiets, with a libretto by the American playwright George Brant, tells the story of a mother who makes a long and perilous trip to rescue her daughter, who is being held at a camp inside Crimea.
While the characters in the opera are fictional, the story is based on real-life accounts by Ukrainian mothers who have described making the harrowing 3,000-mile journey from Ukraine into Russian-occupied territory, and back again, to recover their children from the custody of the Russian authorities.
Peter Gelb, the Met’s general manager, said the aim was to “support Ukraine culturally in its fight for freedom.”
“I can’t think of a better way of doing that,” he said, “than having an opera that actually documents an aspect of the war that underscores the individual heroism of the Ukrainian people in the face of the most dire and horrible atrocities and circumstances.”
Kolomiiets, 42, a composer and oboist who has written two operas and an array of orchestral, chamber and solo works, said that he felt “a responsibility to create something great and to show something very dignified about my country.”

“The objective is not only to draw attention to Ukraine but also to shed light on similar situations around the world where mothers endure immense suffering while trying to protect their children,” he said. “I want people to empathize with this pain and use any opportunity they have, at various levels, to prevent this kind of pain from happening.”
Brant, who is known for “Grounded,” an acclaimed Off Broadway play that the Met is also turning into an opera, said that he hoped to “contribute in a small way to Ukraine’s cause as it faces this staggering challenge to its existence.”
Writing and staging new operas takes time. The Ukrainian opera, which the Met hopes will come to its stage by 2027 or 2028, is the latest display of the company’s support for Kyiv. The Met was one of the first cultural organizations to announce after Russia’s invasion that it would not engage performers or institutions that supported President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, and it cut ties with one of its biggest stars, the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko.
Since then, the Met has helped create the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, an ensemble of refugees who fled the war and artists who stayed behind, which has led two internationaltours. The company has also staged concerts in support of Ukraine and hung banners forming the Ukrainian flag across the exterior of the theater.
The opera is being developed as part of a joint commissioning program by the Met and Lincoln Center Theater, which began in 2006.
The idea for commissioning an opera by a Ukrainian composer came during a meeting last year between Gelb and Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska. The Canadian Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, who is married to Gelb and leads the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, was also present. Ukrainian cultural officials spread word of the opportunity and received 72 applications from composers, which were vetted by the Met.

Gelb said that the Met had selected Kolomiiets because of his experience in opera as well as his deep understanding of Ukrainian musical traditions. Zelenska praised the project, saying in a statement that “the pain of Ukrainian mothers that the world should hear will be heard.”
Russia’s abduction of Ukrainian children has received wide attention, especially after the International Criminal Court earlier this year issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes, saying he bore criminal responsibility for the children’s treatment. The court also issued a warrant for Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, who has been the public face of a Kremlin-sponsored program in which Ukrainian children and teenagers have been taken to Russia.
Brant said he had been moved after reading news reports about Ukrainian mothers. The opera will feature workers from Save Ukraine, one of several charity groups helping mothers make the trek to find their children.
“I feel like there’s thousands of stories that could be told and should be told about this conflict, but this one seemed to convey both the scale of the horror that the Ukrainians face and the courage and resilience of its people,” Brant said.
Kolomiiets, who has been living in Germany since last year, said he expected his score would be “gentle, naïve, emotional and even dramatic.” He said that he tries to envision a peaceful and thriving Ukraine.
“The story has a happy ending,” he said of the opera. “And it’s really important for us to have a happy ending right now.”
