‘Sex and the City’ Shocker: Kim Cattrall to Return as Samantha Jones With ‘And Just Like That…’ Cameo (EXCLUSIVE) - Variety

For one night only, the “Sex and the City” universe will be whole again. Variety has learned that Kim Cattrall will reprise her iconic role as Samantha Jones in the Season 2 finale of “And Just Like That,” Max’s revival of HBO’s “Sex and the City.”

But she will only appear in one scene. According to sources, Cattrall shot her dialogue on March 22 in New York City, without seeing or speaking with the stars of the series, including Sarah Jessica Parker, or with “And Just Like That” showrunner Michael Patrick King.

In the scene, Samantha, who in the show has moved to London, will have a phone conversation with Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw. In the first season of “And Just Like That,” Carrie engaged with an estranged Samantha over text, and in the finale, the two made a plan to see each other in order to reconcile.

Famed “Sex and the City” costume designer Patricia Field, who has not been working on “And Just Like That,” dressed Samantha for her scene.

A rep for Cattrall didn’t respond to request for comment. Max did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cattrall’s appearance as Samantha will not be a continuation of the character for now.

Still, the return of Samantha in any form will certainly thrill “Sex and the City” fans, who have been clamoring for even a glimpse of the beloved, empowered publicist who put the “sex” in the groundbreaking series that ran on HBO for six seasons from 1998 to 2004, and led to two movies.

Cattrall publicly announced in 2016 that she was done playing Samantha when she didn’t feel like the script for a proposed third film did justice to the character. “I would have preferred for all of us to have some kind of event to warrant a third film,” Cattrall told Variety in 2022. “That didn’t happen.”

Her decision to step away from Samantha led to a public fallout with Parker. When King and Parker rebooted “Sex and the City” as a new series for what was then HBO Max in 2021, Cattrall wasn’t approached to reprise Samantha, and the new show added other characters — to mixed reviews — in the lives of Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristen Davis) to fill her place.

As they were doing press last year, both Parker and King said that they couldn’t fathom a scenario in which Cattrall would play Samantha again. But as the second season of “And Just Like That” was underway, shooting in New York this past winter, Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, approached Cattrall about putting her stilettos back on as Samantha, which led to her decision to say yes.

Cattrall is currently starring in Lionsgate film “About My Father” with Robert De Niro. She’ll next play a makeup mogul in the Netflix drama “Glamorous,” which premieres on June 22.

The second season of “And Just Like That” also premieres on June 22, but Cattrall’s scene as Samantha won’t air until August.

'That '70s Show' star Danny Masterson found guilty of 2 rape counts, is led from court in handcuffs - The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson was led out in handcuffs from a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday and could get 30 years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty on two of three counts of rape at his second trial, in which the Church of Scientology played a central role.

Masterson’s wife, actor and model Bijou Phillips, gasped when the verdict was read and wept as he was taken into custody, while a group of family and friends who sat stone-faced behind him throughout both trials.

The jury of seven women and five men reached the verdict after deliberating for seven days spread over two weeks. They could not reach a verdict on the third count, that alleged Masterson raped a longtime girlfriend. They had voted 8-4 in favor of conviction.

Masterson, 47, will be held without bail until he is sentenced. No sentencing date has yet been set, but the judge told Masterson and his lawyers to return to court Aug. 4 for a hearing.

“I am experiencing a complex array of emotions — relief, exhaustion, strength, sadness — knowing that my abuser, Danny Masterson, will face accountability for his criminal behavior,” one of the women, whom Masterson knew as a fellow member of the church and was convicted of raping at his home in 2003, said in a statement.

A second woman, a former girlfriend, whose count left the jury deadlocked, said in the statement: “While I’m encouraged that Danny Masterson will face some criminal punishment, I am devastated that he has dodged criminal accountability for his heinous conduct against me.”

A spokesperson for Masterson declined comment, but his attorneys will almost certainly appeal.

After a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial in December, prosecutors retried Masterson, saying he forcibly raped three women in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003. They told jurors he drugged the women’s drinks so he could rape them. They said he used his prominence in the church — where all three women were also members at the time — to avoid consequences for decades.

“We want to express our gratitude to the three women who came forward and bravely shared their experiences,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement after the verdict Wednesday. “Their courage and strength have been an inspiration to us all.”

Masterson did not testify, and his lawyers called no witnesses. The defense argued that the acts were consensual, and attempted to discredit the women’s stories by highlighting changes and inconsistencies over time, which they said showed signs of coordination between them.

“If you decide that a witness deliberately lied about something in this case,” defense attorney Philip Cohen told jurors, going through their instructions in his closing argument, “You should consider not believing anything that witness says.”

The Church of Scientology played a significant role in the first trial but arguably an even larger one in the second. Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo allowed expert testimony on church policy from a former official in Scientology leadership who has become a prominent opponent.

Tensions ran high in the courtroom between current and former Scientologists, and even leaked into testimony, with the accusers saying on the stand that they felt intimidated by some members in the room.

Actor Leah Remini, a former member who has become the church’s highest-profile critic, sat in on the trial at times, putting her arm around one of the accusers to comfort her during closing arguments.

Remini said on Twitter that the two guilty verdicts in the retrial are “a relief. The women who survived Danny Masterson’s predation are heroes. For years, they and their families have faced vicious attacks and harassment from Scientology and Danny’s well-funded legal team,” she posted. “Nevertheless, they soldiered on, determined to seek justice.”

The alleged harassment, which the church denies engaging in, is the subject of a civil lawsuit filed by two of the accusers.

Founded in 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology has many members who work in Hollywood. The judge kept limits on how much prosecutors could talk about the church, and primarily allowed it to explain why the women took so long to go to authorities.

The women testified that when they reported Masterson to church officials, they were told they were not raped, were put through ethics programs themselves, and were warned against going to law enforcement to report a member of such high standing.

“They were raped, they were punished for it, and they were retaliated against,” Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller told jurors in his closing argument. “Scientology told them there’s no justice for them. You have the opportunity to show them there is justice.”

The church vehemently denied having any policy that forbids members from going to secular authorities.

Next week the judge who oversaw the criminal case will hold a hearing to determine how a lawyer who represents the Church of Scientology had evidence that the prosecution had shared with the defense. The evidence involved links that the lawyer accidentally included in an email to Mueller.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they’ve been sexually abused.

Testimony in this case was graphic and emotional.

The two women whose testimony led to Masterson’s conviction said that in 2003, he gave them drinks and that they then became woozy or passed out before he violently raped them. He knew both from social circles in the church.

The third, Masterson’s then-girlfriend of five years whose count left the jury deadlocked, said she awoke to find him raping her, and had to pull his hair to stop him.

The issue of drugging also played a major role in the retrial. At the first, Olmedo only allowed prosecutors and accusers to describe their disorientation, and to imply that they were drugged. The second time, they were allowed to argue it directly, and the prosecution attempted to make it a major factor, to no avail.

“The defendant drugs his victims to gain control,” Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson said in her closing argument. “He does this to take away his victims’ ability to consent.”

Masterson was not charged with any counts of drugging, and there is no toxicology evidence to back up the assertion. His attorney asked for a mistrial over the issue’s inclusion. The motion was denied, but the issue is likely to be a major factor in any potential appeal.

These charges date to a period when Masterson was at the height of his fame, starring from 1998 until 2006 as Steven Hyde on Fox’s “That ’70s Show” — the show that made stars of Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Topher Grace.

Masterson had reunited with Kutcher on the 2016 Netflix comedy “The Ranch,” but was written off the show when an LAPD investigation was revealed in December 2017.

Halle Bailey Goes Undercover to Sneak Into ‘Little Mermaid’ Showing at Movie Theater: Watch - Billboard

A group of movie-goers seeing The Little Mermaid in theaters recently had no idea that the Little Mermaid herself was in their midst. In a new TikTok, the live action Disney remake’s star Halle Bailey revealed that she basically snuck into a theater to watch the film by wearing a low-key outfit, looking unrecognizable from her character Ariel.

Bailey’s video shows the 23-year-old star disguised in a pair of sunglasses and a face mask as she nabs a bucket of popcorn and makes her way to the screening. Wearing a dark black jacket with her hair returned to brown from Ariel’s famous red shade, fans taking selfies with Little Mermaid posters in the background don’t even notice that the real-life Bailey is walking past them.

“Can’t believe the little mermaid is the #1 movie in the world you guys!!” the singer-actress captioned the TikTok. “Went to the theatre to go see it last night.”

The film definitely made a splash Memorial Day weekend following its global premiere, bringing in an estimated $117.5 million. The opening gives it a similarly successful opening performance as 2019′s Aladdin, but while one of Disney’s top earners overall, The Little Mermaid still falls short of 2017′s Beauty and the Beast, which opened to more than $170 million, and 2019′s The Lion King, which brought in more than $190 million in its first weekend.

Bailey celebrated the film’s Friday (May 26) theatrical premiere with a sentimental tweet on the day of, sharing photos from the shoot and writing: “Can’t believe it today is the day!! the little mermaid is out everywhere in theaters now. This was my first time ever doing a film like this, and words can’t describe how immensely grateful i am to have had this experience with such a beautiful group of people …please go watch and enjoy with your loved ones!! more bts pics soon come.”

Matty Healy dismisses podcast controversy amid Taylor Swift romance - Page Six

Three months after Matty Healy recorded a controversial “Adam Friedland Show” podcast episode, he wants haters to “Shake It Off.”

The 1975 frontman told the New Yorker in an interview published Monday that the February podcast, in which host Adam Friedland made racist remarks about rapper Ice Spice, doesn’t “actually matter.”

“Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy,'” the 1975 frontman explained. “That doesn’t happen.”

Healy, 34, added that anyone who is offended by the episode is “deluded.”

“You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt,” he said. “It’s just people going, ‘Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am.’

“And I kind of want them to do that, because they’re demonstrating something so base level,” the songwriter continued.

During a February episode of Friedland’s podcast, which has since been removed from Spotify, he and co-host Nick Mullen called Ice Spice an “Inuit Spice Girl” and “chubby Chinese lady” while mocking Chinese and Hawaiian accents.

Healy, who was a guest on the episode, laughed along and did not stand up for the 23-year-old rapper.

He issued a lukewarm apology in April, telling concertgoers, “I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you. Ice Spice, I’m sorry.”

While the British singer made headlines for his response when the episode first aired, criticism ramped up earlier this month when rumors that he is dating Taylor Swift, who collaborated with Ice Spice on the “Karma” remix, started swirling.

One of the “Anti-Hero” singer’s fans even launched a #SpeakUpNow campaign, requesting Swift denounce Healy’s statements, while other Swifties canceled their orders for the 33-year-old’s “Speak Now” re-release in protest.

Swift has yet to comment on the podcast episode, nor has she confirmed her relationship with Healy.

The 12-time Grammy winner did, however, bring out Ice Spice to perform “Karma” during all three “Eras Tour” shows at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium over the weekend.

Swift and actor Joe Alwyn split in April after six years together.

Who killed Takeoff? Grand jury makes ruling Patrick Clark, who has been suspect of rapper's murder - KTRK-TV

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The man accused of killing Grammy-nominated rapper Takeoff late last year in Houston has been indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge.

Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, was arrested and charged on Dec. 2, 2022, about a month after the Migos rapper was shot and killed in downtown Houston.

The video above is from a previous report when Clark made bond and was released.

Kirsnick Khari Ball, known professionally as Takeoff, was shot to death in the early morning hours of Nov. 1 outside a bowling alley in downtown Houston. Police said he was in a crowd of people and an innocent bystander at 1210 San Jacinto St.

The rapper and his uncle and fellow Migos member, Quavo, were attending a private event hosted by J. Prince Jr., son of Rap-A-Lot founder, J. Prince.

RELATED: Judge keeps bond at $1M for suspect in rapper Takeoff's murder despite attorney's request

According to a search warrant, there were 34 people standing in a group outside 810 Billiards and Bowling before the shooting. Quavo, whose legal name is Quavious Marshall, was arguing with a man identified as Michael Prince and two young Black men over a game of dice.

Multiple people fired guns during the confrontation that led to Takeoff's death, according to police.

Two others were injured in the shooting and survived.

More than 30 people left the shooting scene without giving Houston police a statement, according to the department.

While Clark maintains his innocence, detectives said he had a gun in one hand and a wine bottle in another when he was caught on camera firing his weapon. Those bullets allegedly struck Takeoff.

Detectives said fingerprints on the wine bottle are what led them to identify Clark as the shooter.

Additionally, detectives believe Clark's gunfire killed the rapper based on the "direction" he was seen firing on surveillance video, according to a search warrant.

Following the shooting, prosecutors said Clark searched for information about the case and also included his own name and age in the searches.

According to court records, Clark purchased plane tickets to Mexico two days before being arrested and applied for and received an expedited passport.

Prosecutors also said officers found a large amount of cash on him at the time of his arrest.

Clark posted his $1 million bond on January 5 and was ordered to house arrest with a GPS ankle monitor.

Taylor Swift, Ice Spice Remixed Karma for Midnights Til Dawn - Vulture

Photo-Illustration: Vulture. Photos: Getty Images

Swifties still have to wait over a month for Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), but Taylor Swift is giving her fans something else to munch on in the meantime. That is, a remix of “Karma” with up-and-coming drill-pop rapper Ice Spice. “I’m a massive fan of this brilliant artist and after getting to know her I can confirm: she is THE ONE to watch,” Swift wrote on social media. Ice Spice confirmed the news with love on Twitter: “sweetest person ever thank u sm 😍💜 i love yuuuu.” The remix is part of a new Midnights (Til Dawn Edition), out May 26 on midnight. And that’s not it — Swift is also releasing a new version of “Snow on the Beach” with a bit more Lana after fans’ jokes about the Midnights track. “You asked for it, we listened,” Swift wrote. The Til Dawn Edition also features “Hits Different,” the Target exclusive track for Midnights, on streaming platforms for the first time. In addition to being available for preorder, the Til Dawn Edition will also be for sale at Swift’s New Jersey shows this weekend as a special physical edition including the “vault” track “You’re Losing Me.”

The Ice Spice remix is Swift’s first hip-hop collaboration since Reputation, when she worked with Future on the song “End Game.” And it could be a bit of karma after Swift’s rumored new boyfriend, the 1975’s Matty Healy, was part of a racist discussion about Ice Spice on a recent podcast appearance. Healy apologized to Ice Spice at a 1975 show in Auckland, New Zealand, last month. “It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued,” he told the crowd. “It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.” Just remember who Taylor’s real boyfriend is.

Rita Wilson says awkward moment on Cannes red carpet with Tom Hanks isn’t what it looks like - CNN

CNN  —

Rita Wilson wants you to know that those awkward photos floating around of what appears to be a tense moment on a Cannes red carpet on Tuesday with husband Tom Hanks aren’t what they seem.

On Wednesday, Wilson posted a message on her Instagram Stories clarifying exactly what went down amid speculation that the moment captured was heated.

“This is called I can’t hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?” Wilson wrote. She went on to say, “but that doesn’t sell stories! Nice try. We had a great time.”

She also encouraged her followers to go see director Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” which stars Hanks and was the movie premiere they were attending when the photos were taken.

This isn’t the first time that a celebrity has debunked online rumors related to viral photos or videos that have captured what appears to be a tense moment.

(From left) A Cannes Film Festival staff member, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson at the premiere of 'Asteroid City' on Tuesday in France.

There was, of course, the internet sensation known as “#Spitgate,” the term born online in September 2022 when viral video footage from the Venice Film Festival showed singer Harry Styles making a motion that caused some to believe he had spit on his “Don’t Worry Darling” co-star Chris Pine.

Pine, and the film’s director and co-star Olivia Wilde, each spoke out since the incident to clarify that Styles in fact did not spit on Pine. Even Styles himself joked about the incident during one of his concerts.

Let’s also not forget those Ben Affleck memes spawned from the 2023 Grammy Awards that went viral when the “Air” actor looked miserable as he sat next to his wife Jennifer Lopez.

Affleck publicly addressed the speculation in March by saying he did indeed have a “good time” at the show, and chalked up the quiet conversation they were seen having to a simple “husband-and-wife thing.”

So, we guess the lesson here is that even though it’s said that a picture can speak a thousand words, it probably isn’t saying what you think it is.

Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’ Charms Cannes With Six-Minute Standing Ovation for Scarlett Johansson as Movie Star Visited by Aliens - Variety

Wes Anderson brought cowboys, aliens and movie stars to the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, earning a six-minute standing ovation at its world premiere.

Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Matt Dillon, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Norton, Margot Robbie and Jeff Goldblum are among the starry ensemble cast — many of whom were in attendance at the Grand Palais with their notoriously stylish and exacting director.

The project tells of a desert tourist trap that was one the sites of an asteroid landing, which also doubles as the location of an annual camp for “stargazers and space cadets.” The conceit is a story-within-a-story, as the cast plays a troupe of actors and stage crew for a play. Johansson had the Cannes crowd swooning as a movie star derailed in Asteroid City (and also as an actress playing that actress in the meta story).

Donning a cropped black wig and always swilling a martini, Johansson fit perfectly in Anderson’s Americana milieu. Male lead Schwartzman earned laughs as an awkward war photographer grieving his late wife and herding three young daughters and a brainiac son.

The events taking place in Asteroid City are part of the play within a play, written by Norton and narrated by Bryan Cranston. The film’s actors play characters stranded in the desert after an alien invasion in the primary story, and are also shown as actors cast to play those roles in a larger story outside the play.

New faces like Carell, Davis, Hanks and Liev Schreiber were welcome additions, while Anderson stretched his old guard in new ways. As the author of the play within the film, Norton develops romantic feelings for Schwartzman. The men shared a touching kiss following a particularly effective rehearsal.

“I’m so pleased to show the movie for the first time. We’ve never seen it before ourselves. Thank you to our cast of stupendous actors playing actors,” Anderson told the crowd at the Palais.

Anderson’s 11th feature directorial effort, “Asteroid City” is a reunion between the director and his “Moonrise Kingdom” distributor Focus Features. “Moonrise Kingdom” also made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and it went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay.

Although Johansson appeared in “Isle of Dogs” in a voice role, “Asteroid City” marks the double Oscar nominee’s first time leading a live-action Anderson movie. Anderson told Variety as part of Johansson’s Cannes cover story that he wrote the role specifically for her.

“I was curious: Who is this person? How did she get here, to be so successful at that time? She’s this star of stage and screen — what drove her there?” Johansson said about the role. “I like the sort of constraints of Wes’ precision. I think in some ways, it’s more liberating.”

“She’s formidable and vulnerable at the same time and just really captivating. Bette Davis’ whole career, the span of it, was something I could hang my hat on,” Johansson added to Entertainment Weekly about her character. “I’m not playing Bette Davis, but it helped give an idea of what this person’s career is and what it was like to be a woman in those circumstances then.”

“Asteroid City” opens in U.S. theaters on June 16 from Focus Features.

Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino star in the first trailer for new ‘The Color Purple’ movie - CNN

CNN  —

Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino made their official debut on Monday in the first trailer for the upcoming “The Color Purple” movie, a musical reboot of the 1985 classic, based on the novel of the same name by Alice Walker.

“Dear Celie, we have more than just kings and queens,” Bailey’s young Nettie says in the trailer. “We are at the center of the universe.”

The movie marks “American Idol” winner Barrino’s major motion picture debut. Barrino stars as Celie, a character she played in the original Broadway show in 2007 – which the reboot is a cinematic rendering of.

The Broadway musical’s hit song “I’m Here” plays in the background of the trailer, which showcases the main cast, including Bailey, Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R, Colman Domingo, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Corey Hawkins and Danielle Brooks.

Brooks is reprising her Tony-nominated role as Sofia, whom she portrayed in the 2015 Broadway revival alongside Cynthia Erivo and Jennifer Hudson.

Described as a “bold new take on the beloved classic” by Warner Bros., “The Color Purple” reboot follows the lives and struggles of Black women living in the South in the early 1900s.

The 2023 movie is produced by Oprah Winfrey – who starred in the original Steven Spielberg-directed film as Sofia and earned an Oscar nod for her performance. Spielberg is also tapped as a producer on the remake, and Blitz Bazawule directs.

In April, Winfrey appeared at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to debut a sneak peek of the film, telling the audience the 1985 film “was the biggest and most important thing that happened to me.” She added that it still holds “great personal meaning.”

“The Color Purple” is expected in theaters on Christmas Day. The film is a production of Warner Bros. Pictures, which, like CNN, is part of Warner Bros. Discovery.

‘The Idol’ Review: Lily-Rose Depp Is Riveting As a Pop Star On The Verge In Sam Levinson’s Cryptic HBO Show – Cannes Film Festival - Deadline

It’s hard to know what to say about Sam Levinson’s already controversial HBO series except that it says quite a lot about the increasingly attention-grabbing antics of the Cannes Film Festival that space was made at the prestigious Grand Théâtre Lumière for the first two episodes of a cable TV show. In a case of life imitating art, the crazy scenes surrounding the premiere would not have been out of place on the screen in a story that, at least as far as anyone could tell, is a satire on the sensation-saturated world of contemporary pop culture, where good is bad and bad is the bare minimum.

Presented without explanation or context, The Idol unspooled in two roughly 50-minute chunks, presenting a more sedate setup than its trailer suggests. The opening scene is a photoshoot for the notorious Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), a famous singer recovering from a breakdown after the death of her mother. Wearing a skimpy red kimono, Jocelyn is in a state of what Depp’s mother Vanessa Paradis might describe as déshabillé, and for the next 100 minutes or so she will never be habillé again. Troublingly, she still is wearing the bracelet from her recent hospitalization, but her management shrugs it off. “Mental illness is sexy,” says the abrasive Nikki (Jane Adams, cast brilliantly against type).

Jocelyn is planning her comeback, but ticket sales for the upcoming tour are not shifting like they used to. To kickstart publicity, Jocelyn’s team have invited a Vanity Fair writer to come and watch the preparations, which begin with rehearsals for her new video, “World Class Sinner,” an actually pretty convincing slice of mediocre R&B. Comparisons are made with Britney Spears, but Jocelyn is more of a rebellious Courtney Love type, and her manager, Chaim (Hank Azaria), encourages her worst excesses, locking the shoot’s intimacy coordinator in a bathroom to annul the record company’s “nudity rider.” “Who would police those tits?” says Nikki, who gets quite a lot of zingers like this.

Even Chaim is shocked, however, when a picture appears on Twitter that sets the internet alight. It appears to be a selfie of Jocelyn with semen on her face, and its appearance prompts both consternation and an amusing discussion of the word “bukkake” (don’t google it, especially at work, if you don’t already know). It’s a bad time for a visit from for Jocelyn’s rep at LiveNation (Eli Roth), and he understandably is furious to hear that she has been branded “the human cumsock” on social media. (“How are 14-year-old girls going to buy tickets for this when she’s frosted like a Pop Tart?”)

Jocelyn, however, is not bothered by all this rather extreme scenario, which gives rise to a brief and not wholly convincing debate about revenge porn and slut-shaming. Instead, she is worried that the new song is rubbish, something she feels unable to discuss with her team (“When you’re famous, people lie to you”). She gets the chance soon enough after meeting charismatic impresario Tedros Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), who seduces her on the dancefloor of his popular nightclub and gains her trust. He thinks the song is OK — it’s just her delivery that’s wack. “When you sing, ‘I’m a freak,’” he explains, giving Donna Summer as an example, “you’ve gotta sing it like you know how to f*ck.”

By the second episode, Jocelyn has been giving this a lot of thought, to the horror of Team Jocelyn, who reacts with barely concealed contempt to her defiantly uncommercial attempt to remix what Nikki angrily calls “a big-titted hit.” It doesn’t help that the video for “World Class Sinner” is not going well either; Jocelyn is a neurotic wreck, struggling with the dance routine and insisting on multiple takes that leave her bloodied and exhausted. Jocelyn’s comeback is getting shakier by the minute, and the sudden appearance of Tedros — a man with no past, just a shady present and a lot of debts — is of great concern to the team. Tedros hasn’t had much screentime until now, but in the second episode shown, he suddenly becomes a lot more assertive, bringing a bunch of his friends to Jocelyn’s house and talking about collaborating with her. “It will be easier if I move in,” he says, as those friends run amok in Jocelyn’s house, one of those anodyne old-timer Bel-Air mansions that young stars so often occupy but never really live in.

So where is all this going? It’s impossible to say except to speculate wildly, given director Sam Levinson’s track record as the creator of HBO’s Euphoria, that something, probably quite nasty, is afoot. Visually, with its neon-noir color scheme and preponderance of red fabric, The Idol is one part giallo, one part erotic thriller and thus two parts Brian De Palma. We can also put Paul Verhoeven in the mix, though Levinson cheekily references Basic Instinct rather than the anticipated Showgirls, showing Jocelyn and her PA/BFF watching it on late-night TV.

There is, however, no obvious sign of tension, at least not yet. Could there be a clue in Nikki’s assertion that Jocelyn’s look is “a little Sharon Tate” and the fact that Tedros has assembled a loose family of misfits as he tries to break into the music industry? And is Jocelyn being groomed when she joins in with a mournful song sung by Tedros’s prodigy Chloe — a frequently nude Suzanna Son — that ends with the refrain: “That’s my family/ We don’t like each other very much/I’m OK with that/But it breaks my mother’s heart.”

Until we know more, it’s hard to make value judgments about morality and ethics, or, more substantively, the arguments about the male gaze and female body rights that are coming in the water like a stealth torpedo. However it turns out, Depp is quite rivetingly game with, to put it mildly, a highly sexualized performance that also is grounded and often vulnerable, discomfitingly addressing the fine lines between porn and art, power and exploitation that have faced young women in the music industry for years.
