Howard Hesseman, 81, the D.J. Johnny Fever in ‘WKRP in Cincinnati,’ Dies - The New York Times

Mr. Hesseman played a fallen radio star who landed in the Midwest on the popular sitcom, which captured the misadventures of a struggling station.

Howard Hesseman, the actor and improvisational comedian best known for playing a stuck-in-the-’60s radio disc jockey in the TV sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati,” died on Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 81.

His wife, Caroline Ducrocq, said he died at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of complications from colon surgery last summer.

Mr. Hesseman received two Emmy nominations for playing Dr. Johnny Fever on “WKRP in Cincinnati,” which ran on CBS for four seasons from 1978 to 1982.

The series portrayed a struggling Top 40 rock radio station, where the staff rages against the age of disco with hard rock and punk songs. Mr. Hesseman’s hard-living character, having been pushed from a Los Angeles station where he was a star, serves as a senior member of the counterculture at the Midwestern outlet after smooth-talking his way into a job.

“I think maybe Johnny smokes a little marijuana, drinks beer and wine, and maybe a little hard liquor,” Mr. Hesseman told The New York Times in 1979. “And on one of those hard mornings at the station, he might take what for many years was referred to as a diet pill. But he is a moderate user of soft drugs, specifically marijuana.”

Johnny Fever was a cherished character on TV who embodied the essential traits of 1960s counterculture: the worship of rock bands; not-so-veiled drug references; long, shaggy hair.

In one scene, he is wearing dark sunglasses while D.J.ing, speaking in a relaxed tone as he leans into the microphone and says in a thick voice, “We’re still rocking on the mighty KRP, where the razor man is standing by to sharpen up your day.”

He told WXYZ-TV Detroit in 2012 that the show was made up of “a lovely company of actors, bolstered by a lovely bunch of writers, so it made going to work fun every day.”

Some were probably not surprised to see Mr. Hesseman excel in that role. In San Francisco, where Mr. Hesseman helped start an improvisational comedy troupe, The Committee, he worked as a radio D.J. in 1967. At the Bay Area station, KMPX, he played “strange tapes” from the rock movement and smoked “a lot of pot — always against my will, of course,” he told People Weekly in 1979.

Mr. Hesseman told The Times in 1979 that he spent 90 days in the San Francisco County Jail in 1963 for selling an ounce of marijuana — a conviction that was later thrown out for entrapment. He would later say that smoking marijuana was “sort of a residual hobby.”

George Howard Hesseman was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Lebanon, Ore., and raised as an only child by his mother and stepfather.

An uncle in Colorado told him about acting, and years later, Mr. Hesseman would say, “Every time that I perform, it’s like repaying him a debt.”

He briefly attended the University of Oregon, but he left school and moved to San Francisco, where he could focus on his career.

Mr. Hesseman, who was also admired for his improvisational talent, played small parts in “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Sanford and Son.”

George Spiro Dibie, the former national president of the International Cinematographers Guild, recalled in an interview with the Television Academy Foundation that Mr. Hesseman’s experience was evident on the set of “Head of the Class,” a sitcom that ran on ABC from 1986 to 1991.

“He was even telling some directors what to do,” he said. Mr. Hesseman played Charlie Moore, a teacher at a Manhattan high school contending with a class of overachieving students.

He landed roles in cult classics like the mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” where he acted alongside Michael McKean, who said on Twitter on Sunday that it was “impossible to overstate Howard Hesseman’s influence on his and subsequent generations of improvisers.”

In 1981, after two marriages ended in divorce, he met Ms. Ducrocq, an actress from France who was visiting Los Angeles. Ms Ducrocq’s friend asked her if she wanted to swim at an actor’s pool, and she said yes.

“I had no idea who he was,” Ms. Ducrocq said, laughing.

She stayed at his place for dinner, and then stayed when he brought out a bottle of Champagne, which, she later learned, he had never drunk in his life. In 1989, they married.

He loved listening to jazz, swimming and catching up with his godchildren, she said.

Mr. Hesseman once said in an interview that “the smile keeps you feeling younger; work keeps you feeling a little bit more agile.”

He is survived by Ms. Ducrocq.

Howard Hesseman, Prolific Character Actor and Star of ‘WKRP in Cincinnati,’ Dies at 81 - Variety

Howard Hesseman, a prolific character actor who became a beloved TV mainstay through his roles on sitcoms “WKRP in Cincinnati” and “Head of the Class,” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Los Angeles of complications from colon surgery he had undergone last summer. He was 81 years old.

Hesseman’s death was confirmed to Variety by his longtime rep Robbie Kass.

“Howard was a groundbreaking talent and lifelong friend whose kindness and generosity was equaled by his influence and admiration to generations of actors and improvisational comedy throughout the world,” Kass stated.

Born in Lebanon, Ore. on Feb. 27, 1940, Hesseman became a counter-culture figure as he ascended into the world of entertainment in the late 1960’s. In 1965, he joined the improvisational comedy troupe The Committee in San Francisco, serving as a performing member for 10 years. Hesseman continued his start in entertainment as a radio DJ, broadcasting under the name “Don Study” and began to appear in small guest roles on “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Dragnet 1967,” “Soap” and “Sanford and Son.”

Hesseman found his most iconic role playing radio DJ Dr. Johnny Fever on the CBS sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati.” Hesseman earned two Emmy nominations for his performance on the series, which ran from 1978 to 1982. Hesseman was also well-known for his starring role as Charlie Moore on ABC’s “Head of the Class” and his performance as Sam Royer on “One Day at a Time.” Hesseman joined the CBS sitcom as a main cast member for its ninth and final season.

Hesseman’s career in television continued until very recently, with credits including “The Rockford Files,” “Laverne and Shirley,” “The Bob Newhart Show” and numerous “Saturday Night Live” hosting gigs. Additionally, Hesseman had guest starred on “Fresh Off the Boat,” “Chicago Med,” “Mike & Molly,” “Psych,” “House” and had recurring roles on “Boston Legal” and “That 70’s Show.”

Beyond television, Hesseman also appeared across several films over his five-decade-spanning career, with credits including “Salvation Boulevard,” “Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment,” “About Schmidt,” “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Gridlock’d,” “Wild Oats,” “The Rocker,” “All About Steve” and Rob Zombie’s “Halloween II.”

Beyond entertainment, Hesseman enjoyed swimming and gardening in his spare time — “although not simultaneously,” reads Kass’ statement on his death.

Janet Jackson says she told Justin Timberlake not to comment on the "wardrobe malfunction" - The A.V. Club

The “wardrobe malfunction” from the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show, when Justin Timberlake ripped off a part of Janet Jackson’s outfit at the end of a song and kicked off an enormous controversy, has hung around as a part of pop culture ever since… though you wouldn’t know it if you only followed Justin Timberlake’s career. He’s gone nowhere but up, more or less, all without ever really acknowledging that Jackson faced pretty much all of the blame for an incident that was definitely more his fault than her fault, so it seemed like an opportunity to make things somewhat right when Timberlake was given a chance to solo headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2018—but Jackson didn’t make an appearance, even when Timberlake referenced the very incident that got her in trouble.

But, according to an appearance from Jackson herself during Lifetime’s two-part Janet Jackson documentary series (via The Hollywood Reporter), she actually turned down an offer to join Timberlake at the Super Bowl in 2018. She says his team asked if she’d be interested in performing with him during the show, and while she admits that it would’ve been nice to get on the stage, it would just be “stretching out the past” and “reliving something that happened over 10 years ago.”

As it turns out, Jackson has moved past what happened in 2004, saying it was “blown way out of proportion” and that, while it “was an accident” that “should not have happened,” there’s no need to keep looking for someone to blame. She says she and Timberlake are “very good friends” and they’ve “moved on.”

Jackson also revealed how Timberlake reacted right after the Super Bowl, saying they “talked once” and he said he wasn’t sure if he should make a statement, to which she said that she didn’t want him to have to deal with “any drama,” adding, “If I were you, I wouldn’t say anything.” Of course, Timberlake should’ve recognized that that doesn’t literally mean “don’t say anything,” so one could argue that it’s still fair to point out that his lack of a response did nothing but benefit him and lay all of the blame on her, but that would be defying her request for everyone to stop searching for someone to blame.

This is also the second documentary project to hit TV in the last few months, with The New York Times’ Malfunction: The Dressing Down Of Janet Jackson (which she did not participate in) airing in November.

One day later, she shared video of herself on the ground in the midst of the altercation.

The Teen Mom OG alum was on her stomach in the clip, with a security guard holding her arms back and pushing her leg down.

Farrah attempted to move her body as the security guard restrained her through out the incident.

She captioned the post: "Never again."

In another slide, Farrah tagged the venue. She added: "What a horrible dining experience being battered and assaulted by your staff.

"Such and unsafe, disturbing environment."

Farrah continued slamming the venue in a follow up post, writing: "The staff yet again attack a paying customer and hold me against my will and hurt me.

"The only 1 out of 3, woman abuse must stop."

Farrah alleged that the staff "should be in jail."

In another clip, a security guard could be seen struggling to keep Farrah on the ground.

She recalled the incident as "scary," adding that she is "tired of people harassing me, holding me down, hurting me and lying about me and selling things to TMZ."

Farrah was adamant that photos and videos from the incident were "evidence" of the staffs wrongdoings.

She posted a closeup of her arm, over which she wrote: "Bruised and beaten at dinner."

FARRAH'S CLAIMS

Farrah hasn't held back from sharing her side of the story online.

She posted the video of her arrest on Instagram, writing: "I'm putting a restraining order on @antonelloparloto who made this dinner reservation and conspired and attack on myself with the staff at @grandmaster_recorders as it was a 'private persons arrest' complete setup.

"I've had a very traumatizing year and I don't deserve to be attacked, bruised, men on me, and battered.

"As a single mother to be harassed, battered, and conspired against as a paying customer @grandmaster_recorders should fire their management, and security for all contributing to attacking 1 person out of 3 people."

She thanked Hollywood police for "rescuing" her, adding: "I realize it's no longer safe for woman to go out to eat in their own neighborhoods.

"I look forward to my law degree and I look forward to court. Justice will be served as always."

THE ARREST

A witness to Farrah's arrest told TMZ that someone in the club allegedly assaulted them, noting that the person was described as a Farrah "hater."

The former reality star grew angry, and was asked to leave the club.

She refused to leave and then allegedly slapped the security guard involved.

A source told the outlet that cops weren't called immediately, though paramedics were.

Once they arrived, someone presumed to be Farrah grew aggressive and police were contacted for backup.

The outlet alleged that a citizens arrest was made.

It's assumed the arrest was made by the security guard, though that remains unconfirmed.

Farrah was taken into custody and released shortly after.

Why Khloe Kardashian Thinks It’s ‘Awesome’ That Kim & Pete Davidson Are Dating - HollywoodLife

Khloe Kardashian was spotted heading to dinner with her sister Kim and Pete Davidson earlier this week. Although Khloe was initially ‘surprised’ by the romance, she loves that Pete is ‘chill.’

Kim Kardashian, 41, and Pete Davidson, 28, were perhaps the most unexpected celebrity couple of 2021 — but her sister Khloe Kardashian thinks it’s “awesome” that they’re dating. “Khloe thinks it’s awesome that Kim is dating Pete. Khloe thinks Pete is so different from anybody Kim has ever dated,” a source close to the 37-year-old reality star shared with HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY.

Like many, Khloe was also “surprised” by the romantic turn of their friendship, which began on the set of Saturday Night Live amid Kim’s divorce from Kanye West, 44. “She was just as surprised as everyone else when she found out they were into each other. But she seriously couldn’t be happier,” the insider added, revealing more about that the Good American founder “loves” about the King of Staten Island star. “Khloe loves that Pete is super chill and down to earth. She gets along with him really well and thinks he’s absolutely hilarious. Khloe’s so happy for Kim because she can see that Kim is happier than she’s been in a while.”

Khloe joined Pete and Kim, as well as cousins Olivia Pierson and Natalie Halcro and SKIMS Chief Marketing Officer Tracy Romulus for a dinner at Quarters Korean BBQ in the K-Town neighborhood of Los Angeles. Pete was also spotted in the same area around Christmas, where he stepped out of a convenience store to buy cigarettes (there’s plenty of well-known Korean BBQ restaurants around). After grabbing a bite, the crew decided to hit up the 60out Escape for an escape room exercise.

A second insider tells HL that Khloe “really likes Pete” as her sister hits the three month dating mark with the SNL star. “Khloe really, really likes Pete. She said that he is a breath of fresh air for Kim and exactly what she needs in her life – a man who makes her laugh, keeps her ego in check and who is extremely romantic,” they explained. Beyond Khloe, Pete has also been spotted hanging out with Kim’s older sister Kourtney Kardashian, 42, her fiancĂ© (and Petes friend) Travis Barker, as well as her mom Kris Jenner in Palm Springs.

“Pete is all of these things. Kim’s entire family adores him, to be honest. Pete is unlike any man Kim has ever dated and that is what is so interesting,” they said. “At the same time, he is extremely handsome and charming. He has his own money and a budding career. Her sisters feel that he came into her life for a reason. What they have is genuine. Khloe wishes that she had a man that would put her on a silver platter like Pete does. She is really happy for Kim.”
