Betty White, TV's Golden Girl, dies at 99 - Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Betty White, whose saucy, up-for-anything charm made her a television mainstay for more than 60 years, whether as a man-crazy TV hostess on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” or the loopy housemate on “The Golden Girls,” has died. She was 99.

White’s death was confirmed Friday by Jeff Witjas, her longtime agent and friend. She would have turned 100 on Jan. 17.

“I truly never thought she was going to pass away,” Witjas told The Associated Press. “She meant the world to me as a friend. She was the most positive person I’ve ever known.”

Witjas said White had been staying close to her Los Angeles home during the pandemic out of caution but had no diagnosed illness. It was unclear if she died Thursday night or Friday, he said.

Her death brought tributes from celebrities and politicians alike.

“We loved Betty White,” first lady Jill Biden said as she and President Joe Biden left a restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware. Added the president: “Ninety-nine years old. As my mother would say, ‘God love her.’”

“She was great at defying expectation,” Ryan Reynolds, who starred alongside her in the comedy “The Proposal,” tweeted. “She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough. We’ll miss you, Betty.”

White launched her TV career in daytime talk shows when the medium was still in its infancy and endured well into the age of cable and streaming. Her combination of sweetness and edginess gave life to a roster of quirky characters in shows from the sitcom “Life With Elizabeth” in the early 1950s to oddball Rose Nylund in “The Golden Girls” in the ’80s to “Boston Legal,” which ran from 2004 to 2008.

But it was in 2010 that White’s stardom erupted as never before.

In a Snickers commercial that premiered during that year’s Super Bowl telecast, she impersonated an energy-sapped dude getting tackled during a backlot football game.

“Mike, you’re playing like Betty White out there,” jeered one of his chums. White, flat on the ground and covered in mud, fired back, “That’s not what your girlfriend said!”

The instantly-viral video helped spark a Facebook campaign called “Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!,” whose half-million fans led to her co-hosting “Saturday Night Live” in a much-watched, much-hailed edition that Mother’s Day weekend. The appearance won her a seventh Emmy award.

A month later, cable’s TV Land premiered “Hot In Cleveland,” the network’s first original scripted series, which starred Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick as three past-their-prime show-biz veterans who move to Cleveland to escape the youth obsession of Hollywood. They move into a home being looked after by an elderly Polish widow — a character, played by White, who was meant to appear only in the pilot episode.

But White stole the show, and the salty Elka Ostrovsky became a key part of the series, an immediate hit. She was voted the Entertainer of the Year by members of The Associated Press.

“It’s ridiculous,” White said of the honor. “They haven’t caught on to me, and I hope they never do.”

By then, White had not only become the hippest star around, but also a role model for how to grow old joyously.

“Don’t try to be young,” she told The AP. “Just open your mind. Stay interested in stuff. There are so many things I won’t live long enough to find out about, but I’m still curious about them.”

Such was her popularity that even White’s birthday became a national event: In January 2012, NBC aired “Betty White’s 90th Birthday Party” as a star-studded prime-time special. She would later appear in such series as “Bones” and “Fireside Chat With Esther” and in 2019 gave voice to one of the toys, “Bitey White,” in “Toy Story 4.”

In a People cover story on White’s upcoming 100th birthday, the magazine’s Jan. 10 issue touted White’s secrets for longevity and quoted her as saying, “Funny never gets old.”

Witjas said it was as if Betty insisted on a last laugh: “It’s a wonderful tribute, and she has to pull this.”

A film honoring White on her birthday will be released as planned for a one-day showing in more than 900 theaters nationwide, said Steve Boettcher and Mike Trinklein, producers of “Betty White: 100 Years Young — A Birthday Celebration.”

“We will go forward with our plans to show the film on Jan. 17 in hopes our film will provide a way for all who loved her to celebrate her life — and experience what made her such a national treasure,” they said in a statement.

White remained youthful in part through her skill at playing bawdy or naughty while radiating niceness. The horror spoof “Lake Placid” and “The Proposal” were marked by her characters’ surprisingly salty language. And her character Catherine Piper killed a man with a skillet on “Boston Legal.”

But she almost wasn’t cast as “Happy Homemaker” Sue Ann Nivens in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1973. She and her husband, Allen Ludden, were close friends of Moore and Moore’s then-husband, producer Grant Tinker. It was feared that if White failed on the show, which already was a huge hit, it would be embarrassing for all four. But CBS casting head Ethel Winant declared White the logical choice. Originally planned as a one-shot appearance, the role of Sue Ann (which humorously foreshadowed Martha Stewart) lasted until Moore ended the series in 1977.

“While she’s icky-sweet on her cooking show, Sue is really a piranha type,” White once said. The role brought her two Emmys as supporting actress in a comedy series.

In 1985, White starred on NBC with Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty in “The Golden Girls.” Its cast of mature actors, playing single women in Miami retirement, presented a gamble in a youth-conscious industry. But it proved a solid hit and lasted until 1992.

White played Rose, a gentle, dim widow who managed to misinterpret most situations. She drove her roommates crazy with off-the-wall tales of childhood in fictional St. Olaf, Minnesota, an off-kilter version of Lake Wobegon.

The role won her another Emmy, and she reprised it in a short-lived spinoff, “The Golden Palace.”

After her co-star Arthur died in 2009, White told “Entertainment Tonight”: “She showed me how to be very brave in playing comedy. I’ll miss that courage.”

White’s other TV series included “Mama’s Family,” as Vicki Lawrence’s daughter; “Just Men,” a game show in which women tried to predict answers to questions directed to male celebrities; and “Ladies Man,” as the catty mother of Alfred Molina.

“Just Men” brought her a daytime Emmy, while she won a fourth prime time Emmy in 1996 for a guest shot on “The John Larroquette Show.”

She also appeared in numerous miniseries and TV movies and made her film debut as a female U.S. senator in Otto Preminger’s 1962 Capitol Hill drama “Advise and Consent.”

White began her television career as $50-a-week sidekick to a local Los Angeles TV personality in 1949. She was hired for a local daytime show starring Al Jarvis, the best-known disc jockey in Los Angeles.

It was then she got a tip to start lying about her age.

“We are so age-conscious in this country,” she said in a 2011 interview with The Associated Press. “It’s silly, but that’s the way we are. So I was told, ‘Knock four years off right now. You’ll be blessing yourself down the road.’

“I was born in 1922. So I thought, ‘I must always remember that I was born in 1926.’ But then I would have to do the math. Finally, I decided to heck with it.”

White proved to be a natural for the new medium. She was bright, pretty and likable, with a dimpled, eye-crinkling smile. A 1951 Los Angeles Times headline said: “Betty White Hailed as TV’s Busiest Gal.”

“I did that show 5½ hours a day, six days a week, for 4½ years,” she recalled in 1975. Jarvis was replaced by actor Eddie Albert, and when he went to Europe for the film “Roman Holiday,” she headed the show.

A sketch she had done with Jarvis turned into a syndicated series, “Life With Elizabeth,” which won her first Emmy. For a time she did interviews on “The Betty White Show” in the daytime, filmed the series at night and often turned up on a late-night talk show. She also appeared on commercials and every New Year’s narrated the Pasadena Rose Parade.

With the glib tongue and quick responses nurtured in the Jarvis years, she was a welcome guest on “I’ve Got a Secret,” “To Tell the Truth,” “What’s My Line” and other game shows — all the way up to the 2008 “Million Dollar Password,” which revived the game once hosted by Ludden, whom she had met when a contestant on his original “Password.”

That was in 1961, and the next year, while touring in summer theater during television’s off season, she starred with Ludden — by then a widower with three children — in the comedy “Critic’s Choice.”

White, who had claimed to be “militantly single” since a 1947-1949 marriage, weakened in her resolve.

“I had always said on `The Tonight Show’ and everywhere else that I would never get married again,” she told a reporter in 1963. “But Allen outnumbered me. He started in and even the children got in the act. And I surrendered — willingly.”

The marriage lasted from 1963 until his death from cancer in 1981.

Off-screen, White tirelessly raised money for animal causes such as the Morris Animal Foundation and the Los Angeles Zoo. In 1970-1971, she wrote, produced and hosted a syndicated TV show, “The Pet Set,” to which celebrities brought their dogs and cats. She wrote a 1983 book titled “Betty White’s Pet Love: How Pets Take Care of Us,” and, in 2011, published “Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo.”

Her devotion to pets was such that she declined a plum role in the hit 1997 movie “As Good As It Gets.” She objected to a scene in which Jack Nicholson drops a small dog down a laundry chute.

In her 2011 book “If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won’t),” White explained the origins of her love for dogs. During the Depression, her dad made radios to sell to make extra money. But since few people had money to buy the radios, he willingly traded them for dogs, which, housed in kennels in the backyard, at times numbered as many as 15 and made White’s happy childhood even happier.

Are there any critters she doesn’t like?

“No,” White told the AP. “Anything with a leg on each corner.”

Then what about snakes?

“Ohhh, I LOVE snakes!”

She was born Betty Marion White in Oak Park, Illinois, and the family moved to Los Angeles when she was a toddler.

“I’m an only child, and I had a mother and dad who never drew a straight line: They just thought funny,” she told The Associated Press in 2015. “We’d sit around the breakfast table and then we’d start kicking it around. My dad was a salesman and he would come home with jokes. He’d say, `Sweetheart, you can take THAT one to school. But I wouldn’t take THIS one.′ We had such a wonderful time.”

Her early ambition was to be a writer, and she wrote her grammar school graduation play, giving herself the leading role.

At Beverly Hills High School, her ambition turned to acting, and she appeared in several school plays. Her parents hoped she’d go to college, but instead she took roles in a small theater and played bit parts in radio dramas.

Explaining in 2011 how she kept up her frantic pace even as an octogenarian, she explained that she only needed four hours of sleep each night.

And when asked how she had managed to be universally beloved during her decades-spanning career, she summed up with a dimpled smile: “I just make it my business to get along with people so I can have fun. It’s that simple.”

Dakota Johnson on her ‘cozy and private’ relationship with Chris Martin - Page Six

Dakota Johnson likes to keep her relationship with Coldplay’s Chris Martin out of the limelight.

“We’ve been together for quite a while, and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private,” the “Fifty Shades of Grey” star, 32, told Elle UK in an interview published Thursday.

“Most of the partying takes place inside my house.”

Johnson, who has been dating 44-year-old Martin since 2017, also told the outlet that she feels like she acts both younger and older than she really is.

“I feel both 48 and 26,” she explained. “I’ve had a lot of life in my life. I had a lot of life really young, so I think I feel older.”

The “Social Network” actress is somewhat of a home-body, and admitted that although she “should get slightly f–ked up” on a Friday night, “drinking tea and watching TV is appealing” to her since she works so much.

“It’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private,” Johnson said of her relationship with Martin.

Johnson and Martin moved into their dream home in Malibu together back in January. The $12.5 million house boasts six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and has a modern Cape Cod-style estate that spans a grand 5,338 square feet.

Rumors have been circulating since December 2020 that the couple are now engaged, but they have yet to confirm it.

However, that hasn’t stopped the pair from gushing about each other in public. Martin dedicated one of his songs to his “universe” (Johnson) during a Coldplay concert at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London in October.

“This is about my universe, and she’s here,” the rocker told the crowd, as the band began to play their new song, “My Universe,” a collaboration with BTS.

Johnson responded by holding her palms together in appreciation before throwing them both in the air and grooving along to the new track.

Martin was previously married to Gwyneth Paltrow, with whom he shares daughter Apple, 17, and son Moses, 15.

Cobra Kai season 4 ending explained as Karate Kid 3 fave returns - digitalspy.com

Cobra Kai season 4 spoilers ahead

It’s time for the All-Valley karate tournament and the decades-old battle between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do is finally coming to a head... with some unexpected consequences.

At the end of season three, it was agreed whichever team won the tournament would take control of the valley, the other dojo closing down forever.

But with bitter rivalries refusing to die and trick tactics bringing out the worst in people, it seems the series could result in putting everyone in more danger.

So what exactly happened?

Here’s what you need to know…

The Fall

Despite their efforts to work together, Johnny and Daniel’s 37-year rivalry proved too difficult to overcome, even to take down bully sensei Kreese.

So at the start of the All Valley tournament, there are three key dojos for viewers in play – Kreese’s Cobra Kai, Daniel’s Miyagi-Do and Johnny’s Eagle Fang.

Kreese has extra help in Terry Silver, his twisted and power-hungry best friend from Vietnam, who since coming out of retirement wasted no time in going back to his cruel and callous ways.

But things are different at this All Valley, with three potential ways to win – specialty, female, and male champion crowns. An overall dojo wins on a point system.

Cobra Kai takes the lead after the specialities, with Miyagi-Do in second and Eagle Fang falling to sixth place.

After a musical interlude by Carrie Underwood, the qualifiers begin, with Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai remaining the top contenders, but Daniel soon realises Cobra Kai has a bigger advantage than they thought, with Robby having taught his new team Miyagi’s signature key moves to get one up in the competition.

By the time the quarter finals roll around, Eagle Fang are almost completely out of the running, and it's down to Miguel to win to keep them in the game.

Miyagi-Do is faring slightly better, with Demetri going through to the semis, but Eli (formerly Hawk) is having a crisis of confidence after an attack from the Cobra Kai’s saw them shave his mohawk off.

But, with a pep talk and kiss from his girlfriend, he’s revived, and faces off on the mat against his biggest bully, Kyler. Defeating him, he’s through to the semis too.

Samantha also makes it through to the next round, after going against Miyagi-Do protocol to be defence only, and surprising her opponent with Eagle Fang attack moves.

Daniel chastises Sam for not winning "the right way" but she tells him not everyone’s "right way" is the same as his.

As for Cobra Kai, Tory is sent through to the semis, but Robby is forced to compete against his teammate, the newcomer Kenny. He wins, but his viciousness gets the better of him after a pep talk from Kreese and he winds up almost breaking the youngster’s nose with a kick to the face. Feeling guilty, his underlying doubts about Cobra Kai start to surface.

In the semi-finals, Eli and Miguel go head to head, but the match is derailed when Miguel collapses in agony on the mat.

After breaking his back in the season-two school brawl, he’s over-exerted himself, and is rushed to get medical attention.

Thankfully it’s just a pulled muscle, and he’s advised to be wary about re-entering the competition. Johnny wants him to continue but Miguel is clearly shaken and uncertain.

Back in the tournament, Demetri is knocked out by Robby. Samantha and Tory both win, getting sent through to the female finals against each other.

In the changing rooms, Anthony LaRusso tries to talk to Kenny, apologising for bullying him earlier in the year in an attempt to clear the air.

But Kenny, having been warped by Cobra Kai from a sweet and loving kid to a vicious fighting machine, instead vents his anger at losing in the tournament onto Anthony, brutally beating him until Robby comes in to break it up.

Unapologetic, Kenny leaves, and Robby realises his protegé has been corrupted by the teachings of Cobra Kai.

Kreese reaches out to Johnny and tries to rationalise with him. Kreese claims he cared about Johnny "more than anyone", saying he feared for Johnny spiralling if he was to lose the tournament.

Ignoring him, Johnny heads to Miguel to give him a pep talk to get him back in the game. Unknown to him though, Miguel is struggling emotionally over Johnny, seeing him like a father figure but feeling let down by him.

He refuses to compete, and as a result Eli is sent through to the final by default.

The final countdown

First on the mat – Eli (Miyagi-Do) and Robby (Cobra Kai). As both previously trained at the opposing dojo, they prove to be quite the match, running out the clock as they fight.

As a result, they're forced to continue into sudden death, meaning first strike wins. Robby at one point gains the upper hand, but hesitates after seeing Kenny on the sidelines. Eli eventually comes out on top, being crowned champion and putting Miyagi-Do in the lead at the All Valley.

Ahead of the female finals, Amanda LaRusso goes to speak to Tory, telling her she hopes the fight will finally end the war with her daughter Samantha. She requests Tory play fairly. In response, Tory thanks Amanda for helping her secretly get back on her feet with a therapist and a job so she could support her sick mum.

It seems the tournament has allowed Daniel and Johnny to bury the hatchet too. Knowing what’s on the line, the pair realise they need each others’ skills in order to be the best.

In the fight, Samantha surprises Tory by fighting aggressively, incorporating Eagle Fang aggressive training with Miyagi-Do defence. The result is a fairly even match, with both gaining the upper hand at separate points. At one point, Tory elbows Samantha in the eye by accident, something that's encouraged by Silver. His eagerness for her to cheat unnerves Kreese, as he realises it's the exact pressure he put on Johnny all those years ago. He tells Tory to do what she wants.

Tory eventually wins, meaning Cobra Kai win the tournament. With that, Silver announces plans to franchise Cobra Kai throughout the valley, meaning the bullying message could soon spread.

But as Tory celebrates her win, she overhears Silver paying off the referee, who had deliberately overlooked strikes that could have seen Samantha, and Miyagi-Do, win instead.

What comes next

Driving home, Johnny notices the Cobra Kai dojo up for lease and boarded up. He heads over there to take a minute to himself. Soon, an upset Robby appears with seemingly the same idea.

The warring father/son finally have a much-needed heart-to-heart, with Johnny telling him not to take his loss too personally. Robby admits he’s worried about Kenny, who he’d hoped to mentor, turning so bitter with rage.

Realising he had a similar anger, Robby breaks down and admits he is sick of blaming Johnny for everything that goes wrong, but fears it’s too late. Johnny reassures him it isn’t, and the two embrace, reconciling after so much trouble.

Kreese and Silver spend time together to toast their win, during which Silver questions why his fellow sensei went so lightly on Tory at the finals.

Chalking it down to "going soft", Silver tells Kreese his biggest weakness has always been Johnny, and since Vietnam, Silver’s has always been Kreese.

Deciding to "cut out his weakness", Silver shows his true colours... just as the police pull up to arrest Kreese.

Silver had beat up wannabe Cobra Kai member Stingray to within an inch of his life, and told him to pin the attack on Kreese to prove his loyalty. As a result, Kreese is arrested for attempted murder.

As he's walked away in handcuffs, the Cobra Kai legacy, the potential franchise, and the power of the dojo, is left in the hands of the twisted, celebrating Silver.

In his final words, Silver says he’s "bringing in some old friends" and will "take care of Johnny", which doesn’t sound good. Potentially, it could see the return of another former Cobra Kai, Mike Barnes.

At the end of the episode, Johnny discovers Miguel has run away, heading to Mexico to find his real father. But mum Carmen reveals Miguel’s father wasn’t only abusive, he also doesn’t know Miguel exists, as she fled when she was pregnant.

A New Ally

Daniel is seen at Mr Miyagi’s grave, talking about how, despite trying his best in the most honourable way, he lost.

But he adds he doesn’t want to close Miyagi-Do, as he “doesn’t want to honour an agreement with men who have none”.

With Cobra Kai growing and getting stronger, Daniel declares he’s decided to "go offence".

"I know this isn’t your fight, and this is a lot to ask, but will you help me finally put an end to Cobra Kai?"" he asks, and with that, the camera pans to reveal the return of foe-turned-friend from Karate Kid III, Chozen Toguchi.

With that, the pair bow to Miyagi’s grave, and get to work.

Cobra Kai is available now on Netflix.
